Monarch Of The Night Poem by Sergio D'Amico

Monarch Of The Night

As you throne the evening sky,
how mellow sounds a poet's cry,
In what dream have we capsized?
and what beauty immeasurably sized!

We stand in awe of the diving waves,
like some dreadful procession of graves,
marching forth, retreating back,
but your calm they lack.

A Monarch that rules the night,
A flower filled with light
with a scent that soothes
a thousand wounds.

what king dares boast,
a reign as young as your host?
and what kingdom so sublime,
as one as old as time?
Who dares your reign behold?
and what blood in your veins flow?

You gave poets a tongue to speak,
and with your eyes they clearly see,
in their hearts you have inscribed,
with your hands they have described.

What you witness along your stay,
may leave many in dismay,
And beneath your throne, my moon,
how many have chosen a watery tomb?

When you yield the morning shores,
sparkling visions greet our daily chores,
We drift back into another world,
with tales of visions, yet unheard,
Your reign once more we shall await,
beneath your reign we place our fate.
