MOTHER FINALLY WENT TO SLEEP:
Mother finally went to sleep on the couch
Company sat at talk with her about spiritual things
Troubling some souls and got on some nerves but
Marveled everybody. Mother's face was a mirror of mind
Only eye and ear to hear the Grace of it is mine to define
Lonely at evening shadow -her body rocked at peace
With silent night - visitors quieted down
To collect personal themes to invent myths in dreams
As deep as sleep - but retrieved… Since daddy passed away
Mother stays busy cleaning kitchen sinks
Washing the scum of life away from cleanliness of hopes
She still cooks for a whole family though the kids left
Long ago to go out on their own, to leave her burden free,
And alone with hope that she could withstand.
Unforgiving she hangs out old dishrags from the mess of
Leftover stains - I watched old dirty rags twisting
For dear life, wrung out many times freed of pain
Absorbed from white ghost stains on clocks of this world
Rags hung out or dispensed raveled like spent organs of life
Mother relates distance at times of burial to limits of grief
I knew limits that Mother would never comprehend
Limits moved from Memories literally from dreams of journeys
Never taken to places she could only pretend -and then
The living room emptied a full tour from anteroom to exit
Full of that sense she remains the coefficient math,
Mother adds it up for correctness in her spic kitchen
A span from arithmetic and rate of life's change.
Mother's, much more than correction attitude makes mine
Radical extensions of life's Grace and thought looking,
In mirrors over dressers, supper tables out in kitchens
Of Elohim's plan, for early morning chicken hatching.
