Mothering Poem by elna mercado

Mothering

Mothering is the most difficult task to do
And here I am the mother of two.
Most of the time I do not know
But as I go along, I learn as I do.

It is like teaching the blind to paint.
You have to let him feel your love to open his mind,
You have to hold his hands to draw shapes and lines,
You have to enrich his imaginations with colors and hues
Because sight is not only for those who see,
It is also for those who understand.

It is like teaching the deaf to listen.
You have to let him feel your love to experience symphony,
You have to reach his heart to make a melody,
You have to show passion to strike a note
Because perceiving is not only for those who hear,
It is also for those who feel.

It is like teaching the mute to talk.
You have to let him feel your love to convey,
You have to make a pilgrimage towards his soul to break the silence,
You have to be honest with the intent of words that he can use,
Because voice is not only for those who speak,
It is also for those who have thoughts.

It is like teaching the lame to walk.
You have to make him feel your love to demonstrate the beauty of movement,
You have to dedicate time for his strength to develop,
You have to inspire him to plan his journey,
Because destination can be reached by those who strive seldom by those who stride.

Mothering is always a test.
You cannot prepare to be the best.
There are times that I am blind, deaf, dumb and lame all at once
But God is merciful for another chance.
