My Cat Poem by Grace Burke

My Cat

My beautiful cat of twenty years now lingers at deaths door
I hold her in my loving arms, soon she will be no more
She has been my constant friend, through good times and the bad
The loss of life for one so dear, makes me very sad.

She came to me when very small, a bundle of grey fluff
She had a bed, she had a toy, and other kitty stuff
She was not shy, nor neither bold, she seemed to fit right in
She primped, she preened was such a site she was neat as a pin.

We travelled life together, through all the ups and downs
Not a truer friend or loving pal could anywhere be found
She screened all of my suitors, then picked who she liked best
She picked the man I thought was right, that I must confess.

She saw my children born, helped to watch them in the night
She always stayed close by them and kept them in her sight
The bond between my offspring and this little friend of mine
Survived the test of childhood, survived the test of time.

Now time has aged her body, she can no longer fight
She will no longer be there when I waken in the night
I hold her close and love her, whisper softly in her ear
As she takes her final breath, I shed my many tears
