My Chosen Life Poem by Ray Hansell

My Chosen Life

I have grown old
The years have passed me like a train
So many thing I've missed in life
But no one else is to blame

I never took a wife
I could never find the time
I never had any children
That I could call mine

I never watched a sunset
I've never seen it rise
I knew a lot of things
But I was never considered wise

Never went to a county fair
Never rode on a ferris wheel
Times of fun and pleasure
Were times I could never steal

I never watched a bird in flight
I've never flown on a plane
I've never been to a stadium
To see any kind of game

You see all I ever did in life
Was to work all the time
All the things I've missed
Now are too late for me to find

The years have surrounded me
They've completely worn me down
I've never known the happiness
That other people always found

But you see I am not bitter
For what would be the use
I am too old and tired
So why make up an excuse

But I've enjoyed the life I've lived
Even if to others it seemed empty
I always enjoyed the way I lived
To me that was always plenty

I may not have done all the things
That others got to do
But in the end when all is said and done
I'll be destined to enjoy eternity with you
