My Cigarette / Her Cigarette Poem by Parivallal Swamy

My Cigarette / Her Cigarette

My love, it seems so easy for you,
But never for me, and when you asked
Me to decide between the two, I admit
I initially thought of quitting, not the cigarette but you....

You asked me not just to quit smoking,
But to dissolve a friendship of mine in your love,
Whom I know now for 15 years and my love! It appears,
She is the one who stood by me when my heart was in tears....

I am so flattered when you said that you love me,
And so you want me to give up on my cigarette,
But why didn't you remember that day, the day
You told that you like the way I smoked....

How could you have the heart to betray?
To betray the friend of mine, my cigarette,
With whom you actually was impressed before me,
And it was you that got drugged and not me....

My love, didn't I tell you before,
That when I was to make a decision on you,
All I did is just smoked another of my cigarette,
When I puffed, all I saw is your handsome face....

Here you are, returning the favour,
In the usual way a human mind could have,
Asking me to hold your hand with one,
And telling me to drop my cigarette from the other....

I could see the love in your eyes, I also see
The ash that my cigarette turned herself into,
During the times we hardly spoke with each other,
Fixing my heart every time it broke coz of you....

All this equality Men and Women talked about,
For years and for generations, they disappear,
With the cigarette in your hand turn sacred,
With the same in mine, how could I be the sinner....?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Though the nation is crying out loud about the equality between genders, my protagonist in this passage is a confident, intelligent twenty first century woman who is deeply concerned about her boyfriend's question asking her to quit smoking. I didn't want to encourage women to smoke through this passage but simply trying to bring out the concern for independence of women in our nation through one of the most attractive addictions of the century - Cigarette! !

Quite an interesting piece of poetry which is thought-provoking, too. I was also a smoker but quit it on the ground that I could not find even a single point in support of my habit apart from its being a drain on my finances. This one has a different story. Thanks. I initially thought of quitting, not the cigarette but you....

Thanks for your comment. I do personally believe that people should not smoke just to take care of their own health and others as well. I am happy that you quit smoking :)
