My Distant Friend Poem by Diana van den Berg

My Distant Friend

I will remember you
in the dawn chorus
in my embracing forest branches.

I will remember you
in the wind that caresses my hair
flying it free behind me.

I will remember you
in red-splashed sunsets
and timid sunrises
opening up the dance of day.

I will remember your gentle heart
that you wrapped in concrete
but which smiled through
and cracked the crust
to turn on the sun.

I will remember you.
I will remember.
I will.
Remember.
You.
