My Dream Of Ancient Song Poem by samuel faye

My Dream Of Ancient Song

This dream - this image haunts me beckons me to come explore
Walking through a village somewhere Was it on some distant shore?
I couldn't say for certain but we left here in a cab
and arrived by some strange miracle in the midst of a procession so sad

My eldest son and I alone walked through those dusty streets
Yet not alone at all for strangers led with dusty feet
Encompassed by a singing throng in a language I've never heard
my son and I walked on in awe not missing the meaning of their words

I couldn't say for sure just how or why we landed in that scene
but the clearness of their voices matched their message and fueled my need Passing by each earthen dwelling meeting each ones gaze with wonder
Feeling drawn toward something unexplained drums sounding like distant thunder

And there upon a handmade chair outside her humble dwelling
sat an ancient one with jet black eyes needing no words for her story telling Connected by something so strong I could not look away
She sang along, that chant the throng was singing on their way

Onyx eyes held me in place The procession passed me by
still singing on their ancient song carried on the winds as i cried
I knew when she had finished for I felt it in my soul
and I didn't want to leave her but I traveled on alone

I woke with that ancient melody still fresh within my thoughts
and went about my daily chores hoping the tune would not be lost
I couldn't tell you what those dark eyes of the ancient woman told my heart
but I will continue listening exploring each and every part

This dream - this image haunts me beckons me to come explore
and her ancient eyes make me believe someday I'll hear that song once more
