My Hero Poem by Mary OBrien

My Hero

A soft whisper was heard
Clinging to the fog covering my eyes
So faint I couldn't make out the words

Soon the veil pulled away so slowly
My eyes drew in the wreckage
The metal and the blood before me

Once again I heard that voice so low
Now upon me, the stranger spoke
'Stay with me, I won't let go'

What were those words to mean
As I lay paralyzed with terror
Still staring upon this horrible scene

My sight again blurry I closed my eyes
Hearing the scurry of footsteps
Each one ending close by my side

I felt a breath settle on my brow
Holding my head in his hands
The stranger, so very clear now

I peeked through the fog before me
To see him as he spoke
'Please help her' he said 'please hurry'

As I gathered each word I gasped
It was me, to whom he referred
Laying on a bed of shattered glass

My body twisted and tortured with pain
My head spinning and hands shaking
He said, 'Can you tell me your name? '

I tried to call out and speak those words
Each one frozen in my throat
Trapped in silence, my crying was unheard

So sudden, the warm sunlight found me
A beautiful light stood ahead
I drifted slowly away so light and free

Torn away too quickly I awoke
Too soon, from my dream of dreams
As my lungs filled with the air I choked

The flash of lights on the horizon
My stranger, my hero, spoke once again
'Today you will live, you must be strong'

With comfort I could finally breathe
Thank God for sending the stranger to me
My heart now slowing and I, at peace
