My Heroes

We will never truly understand
just what they have been through
those brave men and women
have more than paid their dues

We hear so much of their bravery
their resilience and strength
their ability to beat the odds
going to amazing lengths

What they do not talk about
is the torment in their minds
the endless bloody nightmares
when they close their eyes

The echo of the memories
ever reverberating
they put on a brave face
while inside they are shaking

Their sacrifices are many
and so much more than we can see
this is why each and every one
are all heroes to me.
