My Husband’s Second Date Poem by Lorene Kinsey

My Husband’s Second Date

Burned my eyes like shredded onions
Scavenging through my car
Searching for a napkin or cloth
To hide my shattered heart.

Leaking down my reddened cheeks
Then streaming off my chin
Pat my eyes, tapped the wheel,
Overwhelmed by hating him.

Wonder how he still can hurt
After all these challenging years
When an end to all the pain
Will stop ringing through my ears.

Dry my eyes enough that I
Can escort myself through the store
Trying to look away from strangers,
Friends, avoid speaking more.

Say as little as I can,
Stalled by register delay
Tried to keep my burning eyes
From letting the little dam break.
