My Last Tear Poem by Josh Sternberg

My Last Tear

Once again
I find myself in a poignant moment
Under a streetlight's glow
Back and forth, the moths duel for warmth
While I get my belt, spoon and everything else ready
And the familiar sting
With it's rush of warmth, the pins and needles, and my soul relaxes
I'm drawn to the light like a simple insect
Needle in my arms, tears in my eyes, instead of life flashing before my eyes
It's everything I've destroyed or thrown away
Faces, places, traces of memories
Zip by so fast, but oh so incredibly slow
It all becomes too much
I return to my car and pour myself
A glass of neon-green sugary relief that I found in the trunk
Maybe it will keep my heart from freezing
I slug it down as fast as I can
And say goodnight, moon
For the very last time.
