My Own Private Moon Poem by Doug Lane

My Own Private Moon

Not sure how it happened
but I find myself
circling Earth
on my own
private moon

not so far away
from what
used to be
home.

I awake
to a view
of endless
seas of blue,
of blues

filling my eyes
and heart
like a giant
drive-in
motion picture screen.

As I whirl
through space
I call out
to my loved ones
who cheerfully
raise a hand
in greeting
and farewell
as I whiz by.
"See you next time! "
they cry.

I go
and ask astronomers
if my orbit
is narrowing
or widening.

"Hard to say
at this time, "
they reply,
scratching their chins.

"Better sit tight
this year
and maybe next.
A collision
with the Earth
you used to know
would be perilous
for all
concerned.

"Keep spinning,
keep waving,
learn to
make yourself
at home
where you
find
yourself."
