My Sweet Little Gaggle Of Lines Poem by William L Roberts

My Sweet Little Gaggle Of Lines

My sweet little gaggle of lines -
Your time has come.
You've amused my commuting hours
And when my fellows've chatted up
The amazing doings of their toddlers,
As mine're dull and grown,
I've turned my thoughts to you.
When I've been idle and bored
You've been my Sudoku,
Though of an inferior sort -
Your problems may have many solutions
But then again, they may have none.
Now you must take your chances,
I'm done, you're freed,
Perhaps to get a kind comment
Perhaps to get a dozen reads,
Perhaps to get a vote or two,
Then phssst, it's total obscurity for you.
Sooner or later alas,
Our children must stand on their abilities,
And considered without bias,
Yours I fear're few.

Oh my passel of lines,
Still you hang about!
Remembered bits still make me smile -
Yours is haunting most tactile.
But when I visit you in your new home,
How unsatisfied I am with what you've become!
Just look at your rhyme and rhythm!
Never would such incompetance
Be suffered in the office!
Who does not regret in the adult
The false promise that was the child?
And what about those friends
You've made at parties there on the website?
I don't trust 'em
I fear they're wild
And hide a nasty bite.

Oh my flight of lines,
Begone!
When I try to work on your successor
You butt in, jealous.
What'd be so wrong with a nice little brother or sister?
How I wish the craft store sold kits,
Poetry by the number,
Then I'd have a Frost, a Keats,
Or even an antique Chaucer
To hang alongside my Matisse.
No such luck, I'm lost, f-ked and stuck.
Sooner or later we all come to the end of the line,
The last child, the last creation,
That you should be mine!

Oh my exhaltation of lines,
I so long for your return.
Out in the parking lot, first light lingers,
The office remains dark,
It'll be a good hour
Before my fellows arrive
Full of chat and laughter.
On my laptop's screensaver,
Photos of my kids from long ago.
I should get to work,
But I drink my coffee
And remember those times when I was happy.
