Natalie Poem by Armadillo Poet

Natalie

I dreamt of you at a water well
Drawing for a thirsty servant,
But you sang in sea scroll:
"No one who cares about me
Can have me."

And now I know
When I look at emptied walls,
That they'll reflect back to me
A vision of fringe dividers
In a decorated room,
Dog teeth, cat claws, and
your hair will be tangled in it.

I'll miss the stamping of your feet
And you screaming
Whether cats should go in or out.

Will you be staying out too late?
My tears will wander the floors
Between the memory of the clicking
of a dog's nails.

Will you be surrounded
By people who are good?
Or even kind?
My heart won't beat
When it imagines no.

I'll be calm only pretending
You are in your study,
Learning and dreaming.

My favorite thing has been feeding you
Or maybe just knowing that you eat.

I will wonder forever
what you draw.

So now if it's over,
I'm not afraid of what you know
and I owe it to you plainly:

Natalie,
I'm in love with you,
I'm sorry.
