Neighbours Poem by Jai Foesbane Karkhanis

Neighbours

Similar houses side by side
yet separated by a gap so wide
for one screams and it cheers
while the other sheds silent tears

They stand in a victorious land
to which flock elated, many a band
and to one returns its own
the other watches looking forlorn

Though they glow and they bloom
they cannot drown their neighbors' gloom
or the darkness that from it spreads
gutting its yard, on which no man treads

Once they both had shone bright
as together on a fateful night
they bid goodbye to their flame
as it departed to play its game

Together then they left to play
but one returned and one had to stay
joyous did a bosom swell
and another was left an empty shell

Together now in naught but street
bitter cold next to searing heat
one shines on as is its fate
the other doomed to eternally wait
