New Salem is a place where
History is frozen in time
If you’re interested in the past
Well, this is a great place to find

Abraham Lincoln was young then
He settled into this community
His career was only beginning
It was the perfect place for him to be

Various doors opened for Mr. Lincoln
For many ideas were on his mind
And just like every self-made man
A perfect career he’d eventually find

The village of New Salem was young too
A buzzing great town in which to live
And Mr. Lincoln was the kind of man
Who had so much he wanted to give

A gristmill, a sawmill and stores
All of this created the kind of life
A young man like Lincoln was looking for
To settle down with kids and a wife!

Forever New Salem will be linked
To a president that all of us know
As he searched for a direction to follow
He took part in helping the town grow!
