Nigeria Is Sixty! Poem by Alade Abayomi Idris

Nigeria Is Sixty!

On October 1st,1960
When blood and sweats of our heroes bought freedom
Like yahoo boys, we thought we have arrived
We thought we would live the dreams we had wanted to live
So we sang with joy
Ate and drank to stupor
In our green and white brocades.

Today, Nigeria is sixty
Yet our sky is so misty that we cannot see the yonder
Our circumstances so mystery that we cannot understand ourselves
And our children are crying and dying of hunger
Where were all the dreams we had?
Where were all our songs, foods and hope?
By now, we are supposed to be ahead of others,
But others are ahead of us
We are supposed to be bonded beyond literal meaning of love
But we are hating and breaking.

We are sixty years old men and women
Let's sit and reason like the sixty years old that we are
This is our country
Let's make it better.
