Night Duty Poem by Kim Gillies

Night Duty

Giant warm marshmallows cling to my feet and slow my passage as I move through the drawling minutes of the wee hours.
So, so tired.
Eyelids droop irresistibly, heavy like the soft undulations of a Shar Pei dog, a dream hiding between each fold.
So, so tired.
Slipping, subsiding into slumbers.
Suddenly startling back to corporeality.
So, so tired.
Sleep, please, just let me nestle into your pillowy repose.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this while on night shift as a staff nurse in a care home. It was very warm & very quiet & all the residents were asleep. My whole body was craving sleep.
