Night In The Forest Poem by Francis Duggan

Night In The Forest

O'er gum and tree fern shades of darkness creep
And birds head under wings doze off to sleep
And save for laughing kookaburra's goodnight call
A serene silence does reign over all.

And birds who hide from light of day come out
The boobook and the nightgar and frogmouth
And mopoke mopoke the oft repeated cry
Re-echo through the forest and the sky.

From where i stand some twenty yards or more
The crackling sound of trampled on leaves on forest floor
It's wombat out from burrow for the night
To roam the woods and ease his appetite.

In hour of darkness voice of Nature speak
The rippling sound of little forest creek
And Nature's music maker gentle breeze
Play melodies on leafy forest trees.

Were i a poet or bard or lesser great
In words these moments i would celebrate
And though in me i don't have poetic eye
My memory will recall this hour of joy.
