Nightmare Poem by Richard Williams

Nightmare

Rating: 3.3

Up the stairs
In the old family home
Not sure why I'm here
But I seem to be alone.
There's a room downstairs
And I've woke in the night
My hair stands on end
Something's not right.
Got a chill down my spine
Got an urge to go down
To the room where the velvet
Curtains drown
Out the light
Pitch black
Nothing stirs
As I enter the room
As I turn the old handle
Having ran down the stairs
There's a shadow on my back
Pushing me in
But the darkness is blinding
And I'm forced to retreat.
Back out to the hall
Back out from the dark
Back out to the sanctuary
Of a family past
A shock to my heart
A stare from my eyes
The door to the house
Has been opened up wide.
And there in the hall
I stand and I stare
Out on the lawn
Something’s moving out there.
The moon on the green
Sending down borrowed light
Then a change oh so sudden
A new dawning light.
A sun creeps up fast
A day has begun
Though the shadows are away
Coming fast, coming in
Through the gate down the path
Walks a boy, made of wood
And he's smiling but staring
Looking round at the flood
Of the light blazing down
Though he hasn't seen me.
Then a voice from a girl, whispers soft,
Close to me -
'That's Billy!
You don't wanna mess with him! '
And I fled up the stairs
And I ran to the door
At the end of the landing
At the end of the hall.
Just a look
Just a glance
And I see him climb stairs
And he fills me with terror
From my worst nightmares!

Excellent poem, Richard. This poem kept me engaged and I pictured the events so vividly. Very good, sir.
