No Breath (Revised) Poem by Mackenzie Scholte

No Breath (Revised)

You are the reason
That I can’t breathe,
Because when you so selfishly
Took hold of my heart,
Your rough hands filled the space
Where my lungs should have been,
And now when I gasp for air,
It has nowhere to go…
It catches in my mouth,
Growing old and stale
Sometimes forcing its way to my throat,
Where it ferments
My mind fogs,
From this lack of oxygen
My thoughts, which are trapped in my mind,
Suffocate me
Because they have nowhere to go…
Since your hands pushed out my lungs
So you could grab hold of my heart
Now I can’t breathe,
And you are the reason
