Not A Thing To Honour Poem by Francis Duggan

Not A Thing To Honour

Most poets and songwriters write of youth and beauty and most singers of youth and beauty sing
And some will tell you age a thing of honour though I don't see age as an honourable thing
And from myself I don't have to look further for when I look in my mirror every day
I only see the wrinkles that the years brought and a balding head that now is silver gray.

Old Dottie in the shade lay stretched and sleeping she's clearly not the cat she used to be
The little sparrows in her food bowl pecking of any fear of her they now feel free
A few years back perhaps they still remember her food bowl they would never venture near
The years have left her slow and feeling weary and of her they have lost all of their fear

I can understand why wealthy folk have face lifts and in tints and hair dyes hide their tell tale gray
Though in some Countries I hear that age is honoured, can I believe what other people say?
The one in her prime weds the wealthy octogenarian because she know the reaper from him not far away
And she will have his property and money so with his feelings games she now will play.

Don't tell me that age is a thing to honour since I myself have known a better day
Just like old Dottie time has left me weary and the price for wisdom is too high to pay
On looking back the years went by so quickly and time ticks on as the Seasons come and go
And to those who say age is a thing to honour for youth again I would trade all I know.
