Not Independent Poem by AMP Roke

Not Independent

They wave the flag, the colors high,
Sing of freedom beneath the sky,
But tell me, friend, and tell me true,
Is this the freedom promised you?

The government sits on gilded thrones,
Making decisions we never own,
They stir the crowd, they fan the flame,
While hiding the root of their own shame.

Hospitals burst, the poor turned away,
Their pain ignored, day after day,
The sick lie waiting, unheard, unseen,
While wealth buys cures, sharp and clean.

Our roads are scars of broken stone,
Each hole a danger we've long known,
Accidents bloom where care should be,
And they call this progress, openly.

They preach "unity in diversity, "
Yet sow the seeds of adversity,
Drawing lines where hearts should meet,
Making neighbors enemies on the street.

They feast in halls with silver plates,
While we queue up at hunger's gates,
So before you cheer and call it pride,
Ask if the truth is on your side.

Are we really free, or just well-trained
To clap for chains we've never named?
Think before you shout "Independent! "
Because freedom's more than a word resplendent.
