The light shines in the darkness
and the darkness has not overcome it
so it is clear we must confess
who causes this light to be lit
it is not a pale light that lingers
but rather a roaring flame
and when it touches our fingers
forgotten is our sin, guilt, and shame
and that flame comes to us
through water and the Word
this is why we make such a fuss
there is the gospel to be heard
the good news that your sin and guilt
has been washed clean by Christ's own blood
and you are no longer a flower left to wilt
but a refuge in the raging flood
for when God now looks at you
He sees His own dear Son
because He took all our sins to
the cross, the victory won
For now His holy name we bless
because this light will not fade or quit
the light shines in the darkness
and the darkness has not overcome it
