Nuclear Winter Poem by Jon M. Nelson

Nuclear Winter

Nobody is sure how this mess started,
But the human race is nearly departed.
Was it the intense heat or the radiation,
That was the cause of this annihilation?

Only a handful of people were left alive,
And every day is a struggle to survive.
Some are still blind from the flashes,
And everything is covered by ashes.

It's a freezing wind that continues to blow,
And the people don't have any place to go.
The world is now lost, nobody has won,
As the dark smoke blocks out the sun.

Most wish they'd died with all the rest,
For every day they're put to the test.
Nobody knows where their future will lead,
And wonder if they should try to breed.

What is to become of the human race,
Will they perish in this desolate place?
So much history and humanity is gone,
What is it worth to try to carry on?

There's nothing left worth living for,
When humanity is destroyed by war.
Are they doomed to repeat it again,
Or is this a chance to restart and begin?
