Oh People Poem by Mohammad Younus

Oh People

Oh people,
Label me not a monster,
A devil, a demon—I am not.
I want you to see:
Within me, pure, sacred, untainted me.

The beast, no longer hidden in shadows,
Shamelessly dwelled within.
I followed him in yesterdays past,
As one follows a sage, a scholar, a saint.

It is time to reveal my true self within—
The scholar, the sage, the divine source
Of knowledge and wisdom.
No longer do I linger in shadows,
In illusion and delusion.
But how can you witness me as I am within?

The chains of nafs, once confining,
Now lay shattered and torn.
The mask concealing my true face,
Discarded.

In the verdicts of my inner sage,
I have forged ties with truth, with reality.
The monster who beckoned me, off and on,
Now stands at my gate, a submissive servant.
