Old Rebel Army One Poem by Casual Diamond

Old Rebel Army One

Rating: 5.0

I slept as I dreamed of times long ago
I saw a rebel army, dancing on air
I dreamed as I slept, but could see the campfires
The song of the battle, born in those flames
And those rebels were dancing on air.

I dance with my girl to the tune of the waltz
It was written to be danced on the battlefield
I waltzed to that tune and heard the voice of my girl
A voice that called, stand till you fall
And I stood till all the boys fall

We danced but came the news that the war was not won
But armies were coming with tank and gun
And through the whole of the camp
Swept news from the front
A cloud crossed the moon, children crying for food
I knew the war could not be won

So we danced once again to the rhythm of the gun
In a glade, 'tween trees, music not yet done
Then the earth began to rise, hell hot as the sun
Soldiers were dying, but a tune to their crying
The rhythm was an old rebel army one

With the smoke of my hopes rising high above the field
My eyes played tricks with the moon and the trees
I slept as I dreamed I saw the rebel army rise
A voice began to call, stand till you fall
The rhythm was an old rebel army one

Inspired by the film 'Platoon' and its use of Samuel Barber's 'Adaggio For Strings' during the fighting scenes
