On Francis Ledwidge Poem by Francis Duggan

On Francis Ledwidge

He was the creator of beautiful rhyme
The poet who was cut off in his writing prime
A long way from Meath and his old home in Slane
His poems are the memories of him that remain.

From Ireland's green shore for to die he went far
As one more tragic victim of a tragic war
One more poor Irish mother had lost a great son
In the killing fields of Europe in World war 1.

But when his life was tragically cut short all was not lost and gone
For the beautiful poems of Francis Ledwidge were destined to live on
But for a gentle young person it does seem sad to say
That he was one who died in a most violent way.

'The Poet Of The Blackbird' the name he was known by
And lovers of good poetry his poems now enjoy
With the best of his time he did surely compare
He was a true wordsmith and his type are rare.
