On Politics... - Poem by Slava Olchevski

Is our time different from the past?
I often ask the same question
A short answer is No,
A long one requires some explanation

To get the power and be in control
Is still all-time number one goal

Politics is the method that gives the best gain
No matter how much one spends
for his political campaign

No matter, in democracy or republic
Power gets taken away from the public

As soon as the person reaches the coveted post
A king, president or prime-minister
People will realize, but often too late
That a winner is the most sinister

My son, stay away from politics,
It is the dirtiest game
Even if you have good intentions
You will be corrupted the same

People who have resided
At the top of the food chain
Are always trying to stay there
To grab, to own, to retain

Something, anything
That is not theirs
They will eagerly pass on
To their beloved heirs

There is one little problem,
There is one caveat
It is not only money that counts,
It's also good looks and wit

So, don't be surprised, my daughter,
At a party, when asked for a dance
A middle aged politician
Will suddenly speak of romance

And with due respect to the evolution
There is no need for a social revolution
It is still in yours and in mine blood:
The oldest habits are dying hard!
