On Seeing Starlings Poem by Francis Duggan

On Seeing Starlings

Amazing to watch them in unison turn as they fly
And their flocks seem to grow bigger as the years go by
Mostly dark with a purply sheen when seen in the sunlight
The starlings to many are a familiar sight
The juveniles to look at are a mottled brown
They live in the countryside and in the town
They walk fast when searching for insects or slugs on the ground
And in large numbers they always seem to abound
In large flocks they sing on powerlines or a tree
Starlings are birds that one often does see
Of human-kind they are quite wary and shy
If you try to approach them they are quick to fly
Away from you at what is a rapid pace
They panic at the sight of a human face.
