Once Is Enough Poem by Doug Lane

Once Is Enough

Once I aspired
to write deathless poems
but now I'm writing
dispensable poems,
throwaway poems,
instead.
Read 'em,
flush 'em,
and forget 'em.
Once is enough,
right?
No sense
going back over something,
rereading it,
seeing and hearing
things in it
you didn't see
the first time.
I don't have the time
nor talent
to write
such a poem
and you have
neither the time
nor temperament
to reread it.
What's more,
don't tell us
what we're missing.
We don't
want
to know.
