Once Upon A Time Poem by Stevie Ruth

Once Upon A Time

Once upon a time
at a summer eve’s jamboree
there were blue eyes and brown eyes
hiding the hope of finding their someone
eyes lingering for a second too long, asking for a moment
lighting storms of desire longing to be free

Then came the dance
a super hero and a beauty queen
coquettish sensual ruby smiles
handsome dimpled grins
a corny joke, a friendly tease
too loud a laugh, a spontaneous giggle

In the moon lit summer night
were gentle hugs
kisses, hesitant, soft and honeyed
a rhythm of two hearts beginning to beat as one
there was only you
there was only me

Once upon a time
a prince found his princess
a princess found her prince
a deep love, a gentle love
the warm sweet kind
brimming with invincible hope and endless possibilities

Passion acknowledged
absolute in knowing,
feeling
this love our love
will last today, tomorrow a lifetime
as only lovers can believe

Once upon a time
the unrelenting cyclone called life
touched down upon us
the warm sun of desire and laughter faded
leaving only desolation in its wake
somehow we lost our way

And now sometimes, on a hot summer’s eve
I recall when our lives were filled with promise, passion and hope
when love was more than just a perfunctory courtesy
and I sigh remembering that indeed, once upon a time there was you
and once upon a time there was me.
