One Cannot Be What One Is Not Poem by Shalom Freedman

One Cannot Be What One Is Not

ONCE CANNOT BE WHAT ONE IS NOT

One cannot be what one is not
Even if it is greater than oneself
Who knows why the worst creatures persist
While into the darkness
The best often go down?

I am an old singer
Of my own memories
Poems in abundance
Silence as sounds.
