'One Soul' Poem by Trevor Valentine

'One Soul'

We were
At the beginning of time
Perhaps a little before
Together

Not lovers
But one soul
Together
Complete

And then God
Or someone
Or something
Perhaps a devil
Put us apart
And we were left alone
Yearning

Yearning
For how it was
As one soul
Together
Complete

Was that a woeful day
Or just a challenge
To make us
And our children
The stronger for striving
Striving to be as one
Together again
One soul
One special soul
Together

I do not know

For now
With outward differences
We are marked
And caged
Like animals apart
Looking through bars
Looking for keys
To unlock this damned door
And return
To where we were
Together
Complete
As one

And when I meet
With your mind
Or with your body
Or with both
It is the closest
We can be
The closest
We are allowed to be
Together
But not quite complete

For it is only passing
Momentary
Fleeting
A small instance in time
Of the door being unlocked
For the cursed jailer
Stands by
Rattling the keys
And we must return
To being alone
And incomplete

In my thoughts
In my head
And in my mind
We are as one
And that may be love
Or its definition
The striving
And yearning
To be together again
As one soul

And forgive me
If I would cast away
This frame
This shackle
This cage
These markings
This form
For it is no more befitting me
Than it befits you

And if I am fluid in this
In my mind
In my body
It is not a statement
Or a challenge
It is just
Well, it is just
What is inside
A search for comfort
For inward peace
A tranquility
A quest for one soul

I am not alone now
I know there are others
Many more who understand
Who seem allowed to understand
And now seek out
Despite or because of our God
The same unfulfilled transition
Forward or back
It matters not
It is fluid

We will stand together
One paternity
One fraternity
One indifference
One unity
One soul
