Our Fathers Should Have Known Poem by Michael Olajubu

Our Fathers Should Have Known

You could take away her voice,
Induce her to bury her thoughts
In the silence of imposed defeat
And frequently remind her of her faults

You could wither her poise and pride
With piercing words of acrimony:
"You're not good enough,
You're no woman enough…"

She hears from lips that vowed
Forever to cherish and care;
Yet, she endures; she endures and prays
Marriage doesn't make her miserable

But from a woman broken,
Besmirched and bruised,
You take away her innocence
And you'll find no love.

Our fathers should have known
That women are eagles you don't cage;
Now our homes are on fire
Because our mothers (wives)are wounded.
