Our Hearts Ache Poem by Mohammad Younus

Our Hearts Ache

Our hearts ache—
beneath the ashen skies,
where flames devour the land, Relentless, unyielding—
winds howl as if mourning,
the earth's wounded soul.
Homes vanish, lives are fractured,
and the silent cries of creatures— rise from the smoldering forests and barren hills.

O fragile creation, we see you burn,
We feel your anguish and agony,
Our grief intertwines with you—
To the sparrow whose nest is no more,
To the doe fleeing the inferno,
To the sapling turned to ash.

O Sustainer, O Keeper of all that breathes,
Send Your mercy as rain,
Let it fall heavy and pure,
Quenching the fury, soothing the wounds.
Shield the innocent, human and beast—
from further despair.

And yet, the flames remind us—
Not only of forests and fields engulfed,
But of wars we ignite,
Of hatred we kindle,
Of the fire in Gaza, in hearts torn apart,
Where justice withers beneath tyranny's hand.

O Creator of harmony,
Guide us to extinguish these flames—
Of greed, of suppression,
Of fear and division.
Teach us to nurture,
To rebuild with hands of compassion
And hearts aligned with peace.

Let this blaze be a call to awaken—
To tend the earth as a sacred trust,
To cherish each life, each blade of grass,
To honor the sky, the soil, the sea,
As a gift, not a conquest.

O you who suffer, you are not alone.
Our prayers rise like smoke to the heavens,
Our hope flows like rivers to your side.
May healing rain,
May green return,
May solace bloom where ash now lies.

And may we walk together,
united in grief,
Yet steadfast in our resolve—
Stewards of renewal,
Bearers of light in the shadow of the flame.
