Our List Poem by Kevin P. Harloff

Our List

I locked wind inside my heart and allowed it to be heard
It not upon a single thing, but how my soul did learn
It held its own as it may, which your fortunes can deny
Don't look, don't swear, don't speak a word, I will not break nor cry
Widows widow and married marry their jobs their chosen paths
I none but one alone, in the placement of my caste
Don't you know I was as loud as thunder brings its crash?
Quiet, don't make a sound, I'm silent once at last
You may think I look like them or maybe not think at all
Then this means I am you, together we shall crawl
But I take all of these and give them my dismiss
I rule my own, my own to rule, my laws my own to list
One to be a modest man, this one to which obey
To take no pride in which I do to thank you everyday
I do nothing that is great; we are all exactly in the same
No winners, no losers, no gambling we are equal in this game
Another I take my pride and glory in the gloat
Look at me, I am God, I wear this on my coat
I am one fantastic man, in nothing I do wrong
Worship me, you and I, and sing me into song
Third again to be a slave as I were some time ago
Chain my arms and tie my legs I'll rake and I will sow
Eyes kept focus my work will set me free
Who's the master? Where are my people? Who knows I cannot see.
Fourth I rule with power and you shall bow to this
Beg and grovel my loyal ones my hand is your to kiss
Do you dream of a life that allows you in fact to dream?
No way, no how, mercy breaks in and at that very seam
As you see the beginning and as you see the end
Human hopes and human fears together they shall bend
What once was theirs is now and how do you perceive
The list of his and of hers, of mine, and your belief?
