Our Past We Cannot Put Behind Us Poem by Francis Duggan

Our Past We Cannot Put Behind Us

Rating: 3.0

There's always something to remind us a face can stir a memory
Of the past which is never behind us and of the past we will never be free
And the past it will always be with us right up till the day that we die
When we disown the past it would seem that our own existence we deny.

You've heard it said that he or she has put their past behind them that is easier said than done
Since the past is part of our life's journey from it we cannot hide or run
They ought to say they've started on a new leaf for that is a different thing
They've turned failure into success of losers the singers don't sing.

Still our past we cannot put behind us as our past is a part of us all
The good times we always remember and our bad days we don't wish to recall
'Tis true life's road is not all thorny and the good like the bad times do not last
And 'tis true that the bad with the good days will always remain in our past.

About our past we may not feel happy and of our past we may not feel proud
But of it always something to remind us it could be a face in the crowd
Of one who hold for us fond memories or of one we do not wish to know
And that ageing face brings back a memory of two or three decades ago.
