Our Patriarchal Society Poem by kamsin Mou

Our Patriarchal Society

Rating: 4.3

That woman is physically weak, they said.
She needs to stay in the kitchen, they said.
They are not allowed to go outside, they said.
They are not allowed to talk with other man, they said.
They are not allowed to share their opinion, they said.
They are not allowed to engage in a decision making conversation, they said.

Sons are always chosen over daughters, they are given utmost respect and priority, their wishes are always getting fulfilled.
Females are always neglected, barely given any priority.
They are not allowed to have time of their own, they're not allowed to take a break, they're not allowed to work outside their house, they're basically not allowed to live. The only way they can live in a male dominated household is by living like a maid. The purpose of their lives according to the man of the house is to serve the family, especially the men.
Why is it always that boys are given so much respect and priority but girls are under-appreciated?

Daughters? Who wants them? Everyone wants sons, strong and powerful.
Competitive and manly, a son who would take over the family's name and make the parents proud.
Since birth daughters or girls in general are used to face inequality.
Not some weak girl. Who cannot even walk alone at night.
Whose fault is that? Since birth the girls are not taught how to protect themselves rather they're taught how to do the household chores, how to please their husbands. For a daughter wrong is not serving the family, wrong is not being able to please the husband after marriage, wrong is not taking care of her parents and then her in laws, wrong is not living up to society's expectations.

One day she committed suicide, it was her fault, they said. (Family and society blamed.)
Was it really her sin? or was it the man who pushed her into this.
Or the man who preyed on girls at night.
Or the Father who abused mother whenever he liked.
She is supposed to be a wife, they said.
Homebound, cooking and raising children.
A woman who has to walk behind a man, he said.
Never to step in front or stand beside her husband.
Follow the rules and guide for women, he said.
Never to raise her voice in front of her husband,
Never to utter a word against the injustice she face.

Modelled only by men inside a patriarchal world
One day she left it all, ended it all.
As the listener, you must rejoice for her victory.
Only the cold earth became her abode in eternity.
That is how she unchained herself from the shackles.
That is how she became free, that is how she was able to breathe and that is how she was able to live in peace.
