Phantom's Wail (Part 1) Poem by shreya chauhan

Phantom's Wail (Part 1)

Leaving me with horror thoughts,
My brother finished his terrifying tale.
The story began with a mother singing a lullaby
And ended with a phantom's wail.

Thereafter, every voice that echoed
Sent chills down my spine
Again and again a cat meowed
Unaware of my fear and time.

I tried to sleep
But it was impossible.
The night was extraordinarily deep
And for my fear, my sibling was responsible.

Then it came, and shook me from head to toe
I woke up with heart thumping in my mouth
And a scream…too low.
Though the sound was distant, I heard it without a fail
Could it really…really be a phantom's wail?

Shaking, shivering on the chilled marble floor,
I could feel my face color drain.
I couldn't move, I was a statue,
I was bound there with chains.
And then it came again, now a bit clear
If the tale was true-
My end was right now, right here.
My scream was stuck in my throat due to fear
And who would've I called, No one was near.
Out the world I wished to sail,
But not hear the phantom's wail.

It was louder now,
Coming towards me.
I reached the window somehow
But, there was no one I could see.
I pulled the curtains together
And knelt down in prayer.
"In the name of the father…in the name of the father…"
I kept saying;
The other part was lost somewhere.
The voice kept bumping in my head
And it didn't stop,
"God help me", I said
With that I stood atop.
The four walls of the room felt like a jail
And there echoed the phantom's wail.
