OK, OK, OK! So the author uses 'friendship' instead of 'love', but I HOPE love include friendship. I especially enjoyed the last seven lines of stanza 1. 'My dear.....would swear! '.

This is very 'romanitc' in my non-romantic eyes. I tend to shy away from writing of reading LOVE poems, but this one is a GREAT ONE! ! ! : ) bri 5 stars

taper: '1 - A small or very slender candle.2 - A long wax-coated wick used to light candles or gas lamps. 3 - A source of feeble light.' So symbolic LIGHTED 'tapers', could, symboliically, enkindle [ 'To set afire; light. To incite; arouse.'] one's soul.

'caper': 'A leap; a skip or spring, as in dancing or mirth, or in the frolic of a kid or lamb, or a child; hence, a sportive or capricious action; a prank.' [a prank is a trick, to me]

SO AT TIMES 'straightway' and 'straightaway' are synomyms. This is a 'very early' one of Samer's poems, at the end of his 'poems by 'Hit' list'. ;) line 1: I'd use 'not much'

oops. straightaway as an adjective also may mean 'immediate' : ) AND, as a noun, it may mean 'a: the straight part of a closed racecourse: STRETCH b: a straight and unimpeded stretch of road or way'
