Potatoes Poem by Aparna Chatterjee

Potatoes

Nowadays
Life has
Become
So hectic
With long
Working
Hours…
Extended
Weekend
Duties…
Cut-throat
Competition
Menacing
Deadlines,
Work-from-home
Facilities
Making home
Seem
More of an
Office
Than a
Refuge
For
Families.

The ever-increasing
Expenses
Fuelling
The need for
Endless
Job changes
To boost our
Existing
Incomes,
Not forgetting
The need
To be at par
With our
Neighbours'
Opulences ;)

In this ongoing
Race to be
Better than the
Best, depriving
Our body
Of its
Much needed
Rest -
We even
Forget to
Look out of
The window.

And even if we
Do, we might be
Blessed with some
Lovely sights of
Trees, birds and bees
That is, if we have,
A garden of our own.

But given the
Urbanisation
Of our habitation
We might just
Look out of our
Windows -
And find ourselves
Peeping into our
Neighbour's privacy
As the houses are so
Closely built due to
Lack of space and
Land scarcity…

Anyway,
Since there is
No time
For our
Weekend
Outings and
Garden parties
In our
Ever diminishing
Nature reserves…
And country parks

So how do we
Savour nature?

No, not by
Mulling over
The fact -
That our children
Know the ‘windows'
Of our PCs better ;)
Than the windows
Of our homes....

But by relishing
Beautiful nature
Through Google
Yahoo, Bing,
Facebook and
Getty images ;)
And if they all
Fall short of our
Viewing pleasure

We can always
Bank upon
Our screen-savers
And desktop
Backgrounds
For enhancing
Our savouring
Of nature's
Beauty :)

Not to mention
Those endless…
Nature forwards
That coagulate -
Our mail-boxes ;)

And if our eyes
Still don't feel
Green and refreshed
Enough ;)
How about
Switching on
The Telly and
Watching some
Countryside
Documentaries
To make us feel
Ever so close to
Nature, so much so
That nature grins at us
And says:

Don't get me wrong,
My dearies…
But my earth's
Potatoes
Look far more
Healthier
Than ye
Couch potatoes!
