Premonition Poem by Kurt Hearth

Premonition

Sinister rack, on yon horizon appeared.
As if on parade, cloud bank advanced.
Obvious, glad tidings they carried not.
Soon, bright sun those nimbus obscured.

From my toil at tilling the sod, I hesitated.
Cast curious glance, to the heavens aloft.
An ominous disturbing display, I beheld.
Premonition, or imagination gripped me.

As my attention, captive became.
The cast upon celestial stage appeared.
Equine charges, wild of eye, snorting fire,
shackled to battle chariots, thundered by.

Reined by armored warriors, they passed.
Through my being, a cold dread coursed.
Pulsing strong at my soul, fear, anxiety, turmoil.
Stench of war, odor I knew well persisted.

Uninvited passenger, on tepid, humid gust.
Echoing, from within the bowels of overcast.
Broadcast warnings sinister, of impending peril.
In jeopardy, illusions of freedom’s existence.

So great my intuition, my plow I cast away.
With panic filled haste, dashed to my domicile.
From secure resting place I recovered,
long stored away, tools of battle.

Viewing these symbols of defiance,
recalled images of conflicts, long buried.
When before in jeopardy, freedom suffered.
I shuddered, might again that come to be?

Once more, that call to arms should trumpets sound.
I shall respond in answer, join with my brothers,
with defiantly bared sword’s tips.
To insure the right of liberty, of freedom.

Secure equality, for all peoples.
Again as before, scatter adversity’s clouds.
Let the message ring loud, ring clear.
Freedom, a right…NOT a privilege!
