Prerogative Poem by Julia Masi

Prerogative

Prerogative,
The subtext of human frailty,
The scaffold of family foundations
Infuses strength in discernment
Initiates negotiation
between a fathers and son
for more time
Like your son,
bargaining a revision of
his Friday night curfew,
exhausted from endless arguing
concedes to your authority
Jesus,
In Gethsemane,
tormented,
enduring betrayal,
the sentencing of corporal torture
And leaving friends
commenced a negotiation
with the Father
Prerogative,
pleads his case, wrestles
with veritable human weakness
and will, submits to
to the reverent decree,
the only commandment
with a promise
'Honor Thy Father'
