Prison Poem by Melpomene's Tears

Prison

Rating: 5.0

What holds you back, you poor soul?
What keeps you awake at night?
You toss and turn on your bed
As if ghouls and goblins play in your head.

Your soul and heart swells with anger
Accumulated over days, weeks, months and years
Propriety holds the door fast shut
While you drown in rage and tears.

Do you want to be on that tall building?
Do you want to scream your rage?
Do you want to open that door
So you can close another?

Did you blink in surprise?
Did you recognize this dark desire?
Do you want to be insane?
Is sanity driving you crazy?

Imagine freedom, you poor soul
Imagine a world without doors, locks or keys
Imagine a life where darkness restores what light can’t repair
Imagine a heart, free at last.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
When I say doors, locks and keys, I do not mean it literally. I mean society, culture, conscience, etc etc.

This piece was born due to a horrible week that I've been having.

Credit given to Joseph Brodsky for the line used below:

“For darkness restores what light cannot repair.” ― Joseph Brodsky
