I am designing an experiment that test if a new drug is a cure for migraines. An independent variable is a variable that is changed to test the effects of the dependent variable. Our independent variable will be the dosage of the medicine. These dosages will either be none or peak dosage which will be 650 mg. A dependent variable is a variable that may change in response to manipulations of the independent variable. Our dependent variable will be the eficiancy of the drug to cure a migraine. confounding variable is is a factor other than the independent variable that might produce a effect in an eperiment. Our confounding variables will be age, height, and weight of the people participating in the experiment. Random assignment is assigning participants to experimental and control groups by chance. By using random assignment we control for our possible confounding variables. An operational definition is a statement of the procedures used to define research variables. Our operational definiton will be to define what a migraine is. It will be defined as a recurrent throbbing pain that affects either 1 or both sides of the head that is accompanied by nausea, and disturbed vision.Our other operational definition is what is being migraine free. This will be defined as having no throbbing on either sides of the head no nausea or distorted vision. Population is all people that can be picked to be part of my experiment. The population for this experiment is all people in maryland that suffer from migraines. Sampling is a subset of a population that is used to represent the enire group as a a whole. In my experiment i will be using random sampling which is random choosing participants from our population. I will randomly sample by putting everyone in my populations name into a random generator that will produce 500 random participats from my population. I will then randomly assign 250 of my participants into a control group. A control group is the group that is not exposed to the treatment. The participants in my control group will be given the placebo medicine which is 0 dosage. The other 250 of my randomly assigned participants will be my experimental group. A experimental group is the group that will be exposed to the treatment. Our experimental group will be give the 650 mg dosage of the migraine medicine. A double-blind procedure is an experimental procedure in which both the research participants and the research staff are ignorant about whether the research participants have recieved the treatment or placebo. I will be using this procedure to check the treatments actual effects apart from the participants belief in its healing powers and the staff's enthusiasm for its potential. Each day when the placebo and 650 mg medicine is administered neither staff nor participant will know which the particioant is recieving. One ethical standard of my experiment is i must recieve informed consent. informed consent is a procedure in which i must tell all study participants about procedures and any potential risks. I must have consent documented in written form. Another ethical standard is all participation in my experiment must be voluntary. I must use willing participants and they should not feel coerced, threatened, or bribed into participation.
