Quest For The Grail Poem by Laurence Overmire

Quest For The Grail

I have put myself together
With pieces of gold dust
The centuries of dying mothers and fathers
Shedding in blood and tears
The wasted heart of what had gone through me
Before like
A sword that wouldn't answer to reason.

I lift you up
Fallen friends in forgotten fields
Give you my voice to hear
The calling of the rain
We breathe together
We understand each other now
I take your hands' bloodied, crusted fingers
And hold them with a kiss
To the hollows of my breast.

At last, I see the image in the mirror is
Mine own
The haunt of my youth melted in shadow
The dark pupil of the eye opening
Light beleaguered in unknown galaxies
Moving
Farther and farther and farther
Away.
