Rain And The Havenots Poem by ragavapriyan rajagopalan

Rain And The Havenots

During the rain
our kolams in front
of our house
got fragmented
inch by inch
and disappeared
like the dream
of our village youths
of getting government jobs...
During the rain
after Ayutha pooja
the little banana canes
the sandal kumkum sprays
the crystal clean sprays of joy
applied on our
two four eight and sixteen wheelers
are getting washed away
slowly and steadily while driving...
like the traditional social unity
of present-day mankind...
During the rainy seasons
we could not find
any children
coming out from inside
and put paper boats and joy
on the street water rivers
like a politician coming out
to reach village people
on streets after the elections...
During the rainy season
we could not stop
the drops of rainwater
pouring from the roof
on our kitchen
like the tears of our
village poverty-stricken mothers
dropping on the
cat sleeping mud clay ovens...
But rainy season
is always a joy for
the haves...and
a nightmare for the have-nots...
