Reason Is Not Enough Poem by Richard Randolph

What people call reason
is usually nothing more than a weapon
they wield to justify their prejudices.
I have seen otherwise kind people
cut a friend to ribbons with cold logic
and then smile at the carnage,
forgetting that pride is one of the
seven deadly sins.

But meaningful thought requires much more:
like the courage to look beyond one's beliefs,
the fortitude to pursue an idea wherever it leads,
and the humility to admit one's mistakes.
And one must also listen to their heart,
however illogical and obscure.
Afterall, the heart understands things the head cannot,
like empathy and love.
Finding the right balance is tough, though.
Mistakes are inevitable,
and uncertainty is a constant.
But finding that balance is the only way
to truly understand the world
and still maintain one's humanity.
